The gamble of international recruitment

Getting international recruitment right is a priority for many business schools.  In the UK, 86% of full-time MBAs are international students.  The costs of international recruitment and the potential returns are central to the sustainability of many business schools.

The Economist recently published predictions for GDP growth around the world this year.  With the high cost of MBA programs, economic growth is certainly a useful indicator of countries to consider for international recruitment, but is not enough on its own.  High percentage growth may simply be an indicator of a low starting point and consequently only a small number of candidates will be looking for an MBA.

GMAT test data may also provide a reliable source of evidence when planning international recruitment.  GMAT takers in East and South East Asia have grown by more than 23,000 in the period from 2006-07 to 2010-11.  Globally, the increase in test takers during the same period was 39,115.

A more detailed examination of the data suggests that much of this increase was down to China where test takers increased over 40,000 in the five years from 2007/2008.  Indian test takers increased by just under 2,000 in the same period, Indonesians by 1,000 and Vietnamese almost doubled to 1,360.

In these figures there may be an indication of targets for the future.  Take a more detailed look at Indonesia for instance.  The total population is around 250 million, but the median age is around 28, with about half the population aged under 30.  In the last 18 months GDP growth has been at or above 6%.

Outside of East and South East Asia, other countries showing significant growth in test takers include Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.  It is difficult to find a connection between these countries, making international recruitment that much harder.

However, if The Economist data suggests anything then perhaps MBAs with specialisms in Gambling and Natural Resources targeted at students from Macau and Mongolia may be the future.

A tip I learned after years of networking: always bring a resume on hand. You never know the people you met in a hotel lobby, coffee shop, or even smoking areas. Much of the jobs people get are through referrals, or the perennial "friend-of-a-friend" basis. Hire the best professional writing services that you can to help you out with your resumes, curriculum vitaes, cover letters, etc. I personally use http://www.bestessaycompany.info/ because it's quick and easy.
